Year 5

Spelling

SPELLING FOCUS October 2026:

16 Oct: Look out for words which end in _tion. What other endings work? Could some words end in _ed or _ing? Today, we looked specially at words which began with a vowel and then had a double letter. Make sure you are confident spelling these.

2 Oct: Some children are mis-spelling because of handwriting issues. If you don't cross an 'l', it's a 't'. Try identifying the four-letter stems in your word-list and writing them out with capitals and with lower case letters.

25 Sep: It is still a very good idea to read through the word list near the centre of the reading records. Practice the words which have a complete word in them. For example, opportunity has two four letter words in it. Which others are the same?

Words which have double letters are still our focus for now. You will need to know which have double letters in one place, two places, and three! Make sure you read through the year five and six word list about once a day and find out the meanings of any which you are unsure about.

Maths homework October 2026

16 Oct: We have begun to look at multiplication and division. You can make your own questions here.

2 Oct:: Here are lots of addition and subtraction worksheets. Some are easy and some hard. Children should work up to adding and taking 4 digit numbers.

25 Sep: The worksheets on this page will help you prepare for the assessment on Place Value coming up.

Follow the link to find some place value questions to 1,000,000

Write a set of rules for rounding to the nearest 10, 100, 1000, 10,000 and 100,000. For example, when rounding to the nearest 100, the answer will be in the hundreds and have two zeros.

Practice saying out loud some large numbers. Write a few of them using words and numbers. If it's a four digit number less than 5000, you may be able to write using Roman Numerals.
